The Board of Boxing ACT congratulates its boxers, coaches and judges/referees for their outstanding work in 2006. We thank all of the members and supporters who worked so hard in 2006, and we look forward to making 2007 the best yet for boxing in our region.

Memberships/registrations

All memberships expired on 31 December. Boxers, coaches, Board members, judges, referees and clubs should renew membership soon. The forms for this are now available at http://boxingact.org.au/forms.html

Coaches should renew before 5th February for continuity of insurance cover. Boxer registrations must be done at least 2 weeks before any tournament you hope to box at and medical exam results MUST be written directly into your blue book, NOT on a separate sheet.

Calendar and tournament dates

Dates of Boxing ACT's tournaments are presently scheduled as follows (all Saturday nights): 3 March, 5 May, 30 June; 8 September, 13 October.

The 3 March tournament will include any selection bouts for the team to BA's World Selections later the same month (more details below).

The 13 October tournament includes the ACT Titles and selections for the team to the Australian Championships in November.

The draft ACT Calendar including the above is on our website but there may be some minor changes in the next few weeks so please check back later in January.

World Championships and pathway to Beijing Olympics

Boxing Australia has released its selection pathway for senior male athletes hoping to represent Australia at the August 2008 Beijing Olympics. The selection steps are:

February/March 2007 – all states select their teams

23-25 March 2007 – Selection event in Canberra to pick Australian team

23-28 April 2007 – Australian team to Oceania Titles in Samoa

15-30 September 2007 – Australian team to World Championships in Russia

At the Olympics, the Oceania region can only have one entrant per weight division. If a boxer in the 48-81kg divisions from any Oceania country is placed in the top 8 at the World championships in Russia, he will be recommended for the Olympic team for that weight division. If a boxer in the 91 or 91+kg divisions from any Oceania country is placed in the top 4 at the World championships in Russia, he will be recommended for the Olympic team for that weight division.

For the remaining weight divisions not already selected via the World championships in Russia as above, the gold medal winners at the Australian Championships in Queensland in November 2007 will compete at the 2008 Oceania Titles to determine the Oceania representative at the Olympics for each of those remaining weight divisions.

Nominations called – boxers and coaches – ACT Team to BA Selection Event

Boxing ACT will field a team to the Boxing Australia selection event in March, to choose the Australian Team for the World Championships. Nominations from registered ACT boxers must be received by 16 February 2007. Forms available on our website. Selection rules are listed on the other side of this sheet, please read them carefully. Where a box-off is required to make the selection, this will be at our Canberra tournament on 3 March 2007.

Nominations are also invited for the ACT Coaching team members to the BA Selection Event. An email nomination will suffice, and must be received by 23 January 2007.

Nominations called - Assistant Secretary

The Board of Boxing ACT has a vacancy. The position of Assistant Secretary is responsible for the taking of quality meeting minutes and ensuring that they are distributed promptly to Board members. In addition the occupant will have duties delegated by the Secretary.

Nominations called - Delegate to Boxing Australia Council Meetings

Boxing ACT needs to appoint a member to represent us at meetings of the Council of Boxing Australia. Meetings are held 2-3 times per year, generally in Melbourne. Airfares and accommodation for at least 2 meetings per year are paid by the national association. The delegate needs to deal with senior officials from other states, and to put ACT's view on any issues coming forward to Council meetings.

To apply for the above positions, email admin@boxingact.org.au or write to PO Box 366 Woden 2606, briefly setting out your interest in the role. You must be a financial member to be considered. Expressions of interest should be received by 21 January. Enquiries to Julia Felton 0411 030637.
