Canberra Boxing Bulletin - Edition 40 - November 2005

ACT TITLES – 3 DECEMBER 2005

The third ACT TITLES will be held on Saturday 3 December 2005 at the Erindale Vikings Club Auditorium, Ricardo St Wanniassa. The weigh-in  will be from 12-2pm. Latecomers will miss out. The draw is done immediately after weigh-in concludes and no changes can be made to a titles draw. The pre-bout medicals are from 4.30-5.30pm and boxing commences 6pm.

Only boxers currently registered with Boxing ACT can box a Title bout. Non-title bouts are permitted, so boxers registered interstate can box at this tournament (but not in a Title bout). Bring your Boxer’s Competition Record Book to the weigh-in. Please check it beforehand to ensure it shows you have had a full medical examination within the last twelve months; if not, you will be refused weigh-in. You cannot have a full medical “on-the-spot” at weigh-in.

If you want to box in a Title bout, print the nomination form off our website and post or fax it to us as soon as possible.

The following rules apply to ACT Title bouts:

Age divisions

·    You must box in the correct age division, according to your age on the day of weigh-in; however boxers aged 17 or 18 can choose to box in the under-19 or the senior division.

Weight divisions

·    Weight divisions are strictly enforced; however if a boxer is the only entrant in a weight division, he or she may box in the next-highest weight division if they wish to.

Experience

·    There will be Novice and Open categories. Novices can box in Open category if they wish. Senior male boxers with more than 10 bouts experience are in Open category. For all other divisions, boxers with more than 5 bouts experience are in Open category.

Duration of bouts

·    Seniors and under 19s must box four rounds of two minutes. All others box 3 rounds.

You must box to win a title

·    You cannot win a title without boxing; however if you are the current ACT champion and are the only person to weigh-in for that same age, weight & experience category, you will retain your title.

BOXER REGISTRATIONS

Anyone who has not yet registered as a boxer this year but who intends to weigh-in for the ACT Titles on 3 December must post the registration form, payment and papers to the Registrar at our postal address by Friday 18 November. Forms lodged after that date are unlikely to be processed in time for the Titles. The full $80 registration fee is payable for this year and does not carry over to 2006. Forms are available on our website. Do NOT have a boxing medical examination till you receive your boxer's competition record book and papers from the Registrar. The medical examination details must be written in your book by the doctor, not on a separate piece of paper.

ACT Tournament programme dates for 2006 – feedback invited

The Board will shortly decide the dates for Boxing ACT's tournaments in Canberra in 2006. Currently we are proposing to run tournaments on  the following Saturday nights: 18 February, 8 April, 17 June, 2 September, and the ACT Titles on 28 October. This would give a two-and-a-half month winter break. We invite your feedback about the number of tournaments we should schedule, and the preferred dates. Email admin@boxingact.org.au with your views asap.

Level 1 and Level 2 Coach Accreditation

Boxing Australia is finalising the new accreditations for Level 1 and 2 Coach training. We will circulate information about the new arrangements as soon as it becomes available. BA has advised that State Boxing Associations cannot run any coaching courses until a new course has been accepted by the Sports Commission. States will have to undertake a Presenter Assessor Course, hopefully in December 2005.

We are expecting to run two lots of Level 1 Coach Accreditation courses in 2006, tentatively scheduled for Sundays 5 & 12 March, and a second course on Sundays 17 & 24 September. These dates are NOT final and the courses may be able to be broken up into smaller modules (eg half-days) if there is sufficient demand. Any enquiries to rob.barron@boxingact.org.au or call Rob on 62919281 or 0418 806780

Boxing Judge course in November

Boxing ACT plans to conduct its next Boxing Judge course in November. The course will be conducted by Carl Ruhen and Tony Whelan. The Judging Course will be run over one full day (9-5), on Sunday 20th November.

The course is open to all members of Boxing ACT aged 16 or more; if you are not currently a member, you can join for $10 (we'll send you a form). The course is for people wanting to be tournament judges, but is also useful for anyone (especially coaches and boxers) wanting to better understand the rules and the computer scoring system. It is not necessary for course graduates to proceed to judging, but naturally we are keen to get as many new judges actively working as possible. Previous experience with boxing is not necessary.

Graduates from the course who wish to become judges need to spend some time doing practice judging at tournaments. When you complete the course and an appropriate amount of practice judging to the relevant standard, you will be issued with your ACT Judge badge and will be able to judge at ACT tournaments and also at local tournaments in other states by invitation. There is one ACT tournament left this year (the ACT Titles on 3 December), so graduates can do practice judging at that event. Note that all bouts are judged by qualified judges, so practice judging does not affect the outcome of a bout.

Once you have developed experience as a judge at local level, you might want to consider advancement to refereeing. This is a more demanding role but a very satisfying one. We can customise training arrangements for people wanting to become referees. For both judges and referees, there are progression options to become accredited at national level and eventually to continental and international levels. Boxing ACT has one judge accredited to Oceania level, and several referees and judges accredited to national level. We are very keen to see more of our people progress to higher levels.

If you want to do this course and haven't already registered, you should email tony.whelan@boxingact.org.au right away, giving a postal address and phone number, since we need to post out pre-course reading material to enrolees.

Privately-organised amateur boxing tournaments

Anyone who wishes to organise an amateur boxing tournament in Canberra is free to do so provided they receive a permit from Sport & Recreation ACT. The conditions of the permit include a requirement to conduct the event according to the rules of Boxing Australia, utilising accredited judges and referees.  Sport & Recreation ACT will seek a clearance from Boxing ACT for any such permit applications. Boxing ACT charges a fee for provision of accredited officials and scoring equipment. It is an civil offence to conduct a boxing contest without a permit, and only boxers registered with Boxing Australia's state/territory affiliates are permitted by law to compete in the ACT.
