The
next Canberra amateur boxing show is on Saturday 21 September at the ANU
Union (Uni Bar). Doors open 5.30pm for a 6pm start. Admission $10 adults,
and $5 for youth/concession cards.
The
last tournament on 10 August had a great programme, with 8 bouts and three
exhibitions, featuring mostly local boxers.
Twenty-three locals weighed-in on the day: Jeff White-Neil, Michael
Halling, Alexey Mukhin, Tobin Harding, Sam Bosma, Ashlee Lopez, Paul Utia,
Brad Hehir, Martin Bye, Scott Knight, Craig Lambert, David Bosma, Gerard
O’Mahony, Jason Bosma, Lorenzo White, Spiro Black, Ben Crossingham,
Quinten Brown, Brendan Bayliss, Nathan Carter, Warren Nichols, Davone
Chockbengboun, and David Stevens.
A
special thanks to those volunteers who helped with ring loading and
construction, gloving, door control, and all the other tasks that required
willing hands on the day.

the Aussie boxing team
We
are conducting a raffle to raise funds for ringside medical
equipment including an oxygen resuscitation kit. Tickets are $2 each, and
the draw will be done at the ACT Titles on 19 October. Raffle books will
be available the week before the next tournament and will be sold at both
shows. Call 6292 1149 if you can sell some tickets for us.
First
prize is a pair of white Twins 8oz boxing gloves autographed by
Australia’s Oceania & Commonwealth Games boxing team. Second prize
is a framed Manchester
Commonwealth Games t-shirt, again autographed by the entire boxing team.
Other prizes include sets of Predator Paintball passes.
ACT Titles - 19 October 2002
ACT
Boxing will hold ACT Title bouts at the tournament on 19 October at the
ANU.
·
Only
ACT Registered Boxers can compete in title bouts
·
For
these Titles, a novice is one with 10 or less bouts experience (for
senior males), and 5 or less bouts experience (for senior females,
juniors, cadets, schoolboys)
·
For these Titles, open
class means more than 10 bouts experience (for senior males) and
more than 5 bouts experience (for senior females, juniors,
cadets, schoolboys)
·
Only
an unmatched ACT Boxer with a significant performance record may be
awarded a title without a contest
·
The
meaning of ‘significant performance record’ will be determined
individually by the Board. Experience at an Australian or international
competition will generally be regarded as meeting this criterion.
·
Because
they cannot register in NSW, females resident in NSW are eligible
to register with ACT Boxing and compete in these titles
·
For
this first year, it is expected that the Titles will be entirely novice
bouts. Other (non-title) bouts will be scheduled on the same night to
ensure a full programme of boxing. A National Capital Cup bout may be
included.
Results of NSW Southern Districts Zone Championships
The Southern Districts
championships were held in Richmond on 25 August. The ACT had a strong
presence, with 13 of our boxers weighing-in and 11 of them able to be
matched. Congratulations to Ashlee Lopez, Scott Knight, Ben Crossingham,
Brendan Bayliss, Jeff White-Neil, Scott Lovelock, Michael Halling, David
Stevens, Craig Lambert, David Bosma, Dennis Arthur, Alexey Mukhin and
Lorenzo White and their coaches for a great effort, we were proud to see
you flying the flag for the ACT.
Scott Lovelock came
away with the 67kg Cadet (Open Division) title, Alexey Muhkin stepped up a
division to take the 91kg Senior (Novice Division) title, while Craig
Lambert fought twice in the same day to win the 71kg Senior (Novice
Division) title.
Karen O’Brien to represent Australia
at World Championships
The Underground’s
Karen O’Brien has nominated for the Australian team to the Women’s
World Championships in Turkey in late October. Karen will box in the 71kg
division. A great step forward for women’s boxing in the ACT.
Insurance – public liability,
professional indemnity, athlete accident/injury
ACT Boxing is about to
finalise insurance to protect the organisation against public liability
claims. We are also investigating
professional indemnity cover ($1 million) for officials and boxing coaches
registered with us. Additionally, we are considering cover for boxers for
medical costs for injury suffered through competing, sparring, training or
travelling to/from venues for these activities. Full details in the next
newsletter.
Milestones: Boxer registrations
steadily increasing
As
at publication date, there were 57 boxers registered in the ACT, of whom 7
are female. We can feel reasonably pleased with the growth in
participation rate in this first year of independent operation. However
this figure must explode into much larger numbers next year in order to
have a stable base for internal competition and selection.
Anyone
aged 10 or more can register to box, female or male, no upper age limit.
The more people registered, the greater chance you all have of being able
to get matched for a bout. A list of all registered boxers is on our
website.
National Capital Trophies
Experienced
ACT boxers can by arrangement compete against a similarly experienced
boxer from interstate, for a National Capital trophy.
The trophy is not a title, and is retained permanently by the
winner. It is open to boxers with more than 10 bouts experience
(senior males) and more than 5 bouts experience (senior females,
masters, juniors, cadets, schoolboys). One or two such bouts will be
considered for each tournament. The Trophy was originally to be a belt,
but suppliers of boxing belts have proved difficult to find. Currently we
use a Cup as our trophy mechanism.
International body to review weight
divisions and ban on professional boxers
At a special Congress
in October, the international amateur boxing body AIBA is expected to
consider relaxing the current total ban on admitting boxers with
professional experience. In addition, the weight divisions used for
international competition will be reviewed. We can expect the national
body in Australia to adopt changes in its rules shortly thereafter, with
flow-on to all states and territories. We’ll provide full details in an
upcoming edition.
Level One coaching courses –
alternative scheduling
Another Level One
Boxing Coach course was conducted on the weekend 7-8 September, with 3
coaches doing their refresher training and 12 new coaches completing the
course. Course graduates now undertake supervised practicum experience
after which they will be registered with the National Coaching
Accreditation Scheme.
We have had several
enquiries from people who find a full weekend difficult to accommodate
because of work commitments. If you want to do your L1 course but can’t
manage a full weekend, register your interest with us and we’ll consider
a special course timetable later this year – for example running over
two consecutive Sundays in November. Phone the office on 6292 1149 and
talk to us about it.
Boxers’ details on our website –
are your details up-to-date?
The ACT Boxing website
(http://actboxing.com) lists the name, weight division, age and experience
of each ACT registered boxer. As the numbers grow, it becomes more
difficult to keep these details up to date. Boxers and coaches, please
check the list occasionally to make sure the details are correct – if
amendments are needed, call us.
Email addresses – why we’d like to
have yours!
If you have an email
account, why not let us know the details. We can add you to our ACT Boxing
Broadcast Email list so that occasional items of news/interest can be
circulated to you quickly. We also notify people when the next edition of
the newsletter is available online at our website (you can choose this
method of notification instead of receiving a paper copy of the newsletter
if you wish). Call 6292 1149, or email admin@actboxing.com
