Australian team takes 3 Gold medals
at Manchester
After
a couple of months away in hard training in Europe, Canberra’s Michael
Ninness wasn’t one of the lucky few to reach the quarter-finals in
Manchester, losing his preliminary bout. Mick returns to Canberra on 11th
August.
Medals went to fellow
team members Justin Kane (54kg GOLD), Daniel Geale (67kg GOLD), Paul
Miller (75kg GOLD) and Ben McEachran (81kg Bronze). The best Commonwealth
games result ever!

awarded a title without a contest
·
The
meaning of ‘significant performance record’ will be determined by the
Board. Experience at an Australian or international competition will
generally be regarded as meeting this criterion.
ACT Team Selection for Australian Championships
The
Board of ACT Boxing retains the right to select the ACT team to compete at
the Australian Championships in Hobart next March. The Board must be
satisfied that the boxers will be able to handle competition at National
Level.
·
Only ACT
Registered Boxers can be nominated for the ACT Team
·
A
nomination must be submitted by the boxer’s coach on the appropriate
form, by 30 November 2002
·
Nominees
should normally have had more than 10 bouts experience (for senior
males) and more than 5 bouts experience (for senior females,
juniors, cadets, schoolboys)
·
The
Board will give priority to nominees who hold an ACT Title, or who have
won a recent NSW Southern Districts Title, or who have won a National
Capital Belt
·
Nominees
with limited experience will be assessed for suitability via an in-house
grading process involving a scored sparring match against an experienced
boxer
·
The
Board will consider the quality of the opponents against whom a nominee
has previously competed
·
The
Board may require any nominee to be evaluated for match fitness in
February by a competition bout or by a scored sparring session
·
The Board will
finalise the membership of the ACT Team in February 2003
Female boxers.
The first
female bout in Canberra was held on 29 June. Despite being nervous about
the significance of the event, Holly
Dunstan and Donna Williamson had a good first bout which was very popular
with the audience. We are keen to see more women register; the more female
boxers who register the more chances there are of getting matched
We are
getting a few enquiries from New South Wales women who can’t box there
because of the current laws; they can of course register with ACT Boxing
and compete here, and we hope lots will!
Donations to PCYC ring fund are tax
deductible
The
Canberra Police and Citizens Youth Club have a fund set up to raise money
for a new boxing ring. The ring will be kept in storage and used for ACT
tournaments and for hire. An ACT Government grant of up to 50% of the cost
has been applied for, and we will know in November whether the application
succeeds. If you make a donation to the PCYC Ring Fund, your donation is
tax-deductible.
The
PCYC Raffle to help raise funds for the ring will be drawn at the
tournament on Saturday 10th August. Sellers, please ensure all
books and monies are returned to Marc Tawton by 6pm on that day.
Acquisition of Computer
Scoring equipment
ACT
Boxing has received a brand new electronic scoring system, which will be
used for judging at all future tournaments. We will be arranging training
for people wanting to understand the computer scoring system and practice
its use, including instruction on programming and setting up the equipment
before a tournament.
