Canberra Boxing Bulletin - Edition 23, January 2002 AIBA rescinds changes to weight divisions The international body AIBA has reversed its recent decision which changed the weight divisions for amateur boxers. As a result the new weight divisions announced in the last newsletter are no longer valid. We return to the previous 12 weight divisions, which were 48, 51, 54, 57, 60, 63.5, 67, 71, 75, 81, 91, and over-91 kilograms. The decision followed strong criticism of the original decision by the US and European associations. It remains the case that the International Olympic Committee will only provide time-slots for 11 weight divisions at the next Olympics, and AIBA will review the weight divisions later this year. February 16 - tournament at ANU Union Refectory Our first tournament this year is on Saturday 16th February, at the ANU Union Refectory (“Uni Bar”). Weigh-in 12-2pm, medical 4.30pm. Doors open 5.30pm for a 6pm start. Admission: $15 adult, $10 student/youth, $35 family (2+2). There will be a number of locals having their first bout, come along and encourage them. Bring your friends and family, children are welcome. Boxer Registration forms available online or by fax Forms to register as a boxer are now available from active ACT coaches. You can also print a copy of the form via our internet site http://actboxing.com, or you can call 6292 1149 to have a form posted or faxed to you. Boxers MUST register in advance - registration will not be done on the day of a tournament. Initial and annual medical exams are now done AFTER registration/renewal; we will send you your book with a letter for your doctor, to help him/her carry out the appropriate medical examination and record the results in your book. Boxers and coaches please note: boxers CANNOT do their annual medical at the pre-bout medical of a tournament. Boxers who attempt to weigh-in without an annual medical exam already recorded in their book will be turned away. It is the boxer’s responsibility to organise their registration and annual medical well in advance, and coaches should ensure their boxers do so. Tournaments and matching of boxers Coaches who want a match for their boxer at any tournament should make contact with other coaches to arrange this. You are much more likely to get a match if you do the groundwork personally. If you need contact numbers for NSW coaches, call 6292 1149 for a list. Judge/Referee training On the weekend 2-3 February a referee/judge course is planned. Any adult can attend the course which is free of charge. Boxers and coaches are welcome to take the course. Call 6292 1149 for details. Level 1 coaching course 2-3 March There will be a Level 1 boxing coaching course held on the weekend 2-3 March. Call 6292 1149 to register your interest and for details of fees etc. This course will be conducted by ACT Boxing, to NCAS standards. New South Wales Amateur Boxing Association Calendar for 2002

Clarification about State Titles and selections Traditionally, the other states have had a State Titles between September and early November each year, and the gold medal winners were generally selected to represent that State in the Australian Championships which were held each November. This has all changed. Firstly, the Australian Championships will (from this year) be held in March, not November. This allows the national coach to use the championships as a selection mechanism for the Commonwealth Games in July this year. This is not a “one-off” situation; the Australian Championships will be in March every year from now on, and will be used for selecting teams for Oceania and Commonwealth Games (and possibly other events). Secondly, each state (including the ACT) is expected to retain its State Titles at the usual time of year (ie September-November). The State Titles are no longer a selection tool for the Australian Championships. Thirdly, the selection of state teams for the Australian Championships will be done by a separate process each February. NSW is using round-robin competitions, whilst the ACT this year has invited a number of boxers to nominate for selection, and will assess each nominee for readiness in mid February. Fourthly, ACT boxers cannot take part in selection trials in NSW or any other state, nor can they compete in the NSW State Titles. ACT boxers can compete in ordinary NSW tournaments and also in the NSW Southern Districts Titles, and are encouraged to do so to support the Southern Districts clubs. Finally, ACT residents must register with ACT Boxing, and NSW residents with NSWABA. However people residing in NSW close to Canberra (eg Queanbeyan) who train at a Canberra club can register with ACT Boxing. Additionally, females resident in New South Wales can register as boxers with ACT Boxing as they are unable to register in NSW.
