Canberra Boxing Bulletin

Edition 19 - July 2001

Next tournament 21 July at ANU Union

Our next show is on Saturday 21st July at the ANU Union building. Please note this is a change from the advertised venue, as the Italo-Australian Club became unavailable.

The ANU Union doors open 5.30pm, and bouts commence 6pm. Please park legally, parking officers patrol the campus on weekends.

Boxers and coaches: Weighin is 12-2pm, medicals 4pm. You must have your NSWABA registration up-to-date beforehand. This is possibly your last chance to box in Canberra this year, as the October tournament has been cancelled because of the re-scheduling of the national titles.

We will have the members of the Board of Management of the federal boxing body (ABAI) as our guests on 21 July. It is particularly important that we have a good turnout of local boxers competing, and a good audience rollup, as the ABAI will shortly afterwards be making a critical decision affecting our future. Please bring along as many of your friends and family as possible on 21 July, to make this tournament our biggest & best.

Our last show at ANU on 2 June was well patronised and had an excellent line-up of boxers competing in 15 bouts plus 3 exhibitions, including several bouts featuring under-14 boxers. There were 9 local boxers on the programme, and boxers from Sydney, Dubbo, Penrith, Batemans Bay, Oakdale, Bathurst, Newcastle, Wagga Wagga and Richmond.

We were extremely pleased with the professional quality of the videotapes by Duffco Productions, who will be taping the July show also. You can order tapes from their booking table on the night.

International debut for Canberra boxer at Kings Cup in Thailand
Canberra heavyweight & NSW State Champion Michael Ninness was selected for the Australian team to the Kings Cup in Thailand from 1-7 July. Michael lost his semi-final bout against Iran, but gains good experience of international competition.

Southern Zone Titles
This year’s Southern Zone titles will be on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 August in Richmond. There will be a novices division as well as an open division. Pre-nomination is required. Futher details will be circulated to coaches soon.

National Titles
This year it is the turn of New South Wales to host the National Championships. Previously it had been announced that the event would be held 2-4 November. NSWABA has now moved this event forward to 12-14 October, at the Chester Hill RSL.

Regrettably this clashes with our scheduled tournament on 13 October, which must therefore be cancelled. An alternative date may be found for another Canberra show, and if so this will be notified in the next newsletter.

Anyone planning to attend the State or National titles (both at Chester Hill RSL) should consider arranging accommodation well in advance as there may be difficulty getting rooms. We have details of accommodation options, and the option of pooling funds to travel up in a rented minibus will be considered.

Boxer registration
Anyone not yet registered and financial who wishes to box anywhere this year should sort out their registration immediately. Call Tony on 6292 1149 for a form. Do not leave registration till the day of the tournament, it causes significant delays to the weigh-in process, and inconveniences your fellow athletes and their coaches.

Referee/Judge course
Anyone interested in doing referee/judge training in the coming months should contact Tony Whelan on 6292 1149 immediately.

Smoke-Free Policy
There have been repeated complaints about smoking being permitted at some NSW tournaments. ACT Boxing has now formally requested the Southern Zone to implement a smoke-free policy and we have also asked the national body (ABAI) to implement such a policy binding on all state associations. We will report progress on this in a subsequent edition of this newsletter.
