Venues for Canberra shows 2001

Venues for the ACT tournaments have been settled. The first local tournament for the year on Saturday 7th April is at the Police & Citizens Youth Club in McKay Gardens, Turner.

The second show is on Saturday 2nd June at the Union complex of the Australian National  University in Civic. The third and fourth shows for the year (21st July and 13th October) will both be held in the air-conditioned comfort of the Italo-Australian Club in Forrest, just near the Manuka shops.  The June, July & October shows all have licensed bar facilities. All venues are smoke-free. Weigh-in for all  Canberra shows is 12-1pm, medicals 4.30pm, and boxing starts 6pm sharp. Doors open to spectators at 5.30pm.

With 5 affiliated clubs in Canberra now, and more in the pipeline, we can expect a record number of local boxers to weigh in. Boxers must be registered & financial in advance of the tournaments; this cannot be done on the day of the tournament. Call 6292 1149 now if you need a registration form.

Changes to NSWABA tournament calendar

There are some changes to the NSWABA Calendar published in the last edition of CBB. On 28 April, instead of Bowral Boxing Club Mittagong RSL, read “Goulburn PCYC”, and on 7 July, instead of Goulburn PCYC read “Bowral Boxing Club Mittagong RSL”. Additionally, the 12 May date for Batemans Bay has been cancelled.

Asian Games & Arafura Games — fair play?

Michael Ninness won all heavyweight bouts in a recent round robin to pick a NSW team  for  national  pre-selections for  the Asian Games in May. However NSWABA had already decided that the heavyweight & several other divisions would not be sent. Boxers discovered this after the round robin was over. NSWABA officials say it was an “oversight” that boxers were not told.  This is not fair play.  NSW selection procedures should be accountable and transparent, instead of being conducted in secrecy and on the basis of undocumented criteria.  Ninness & Adam Lovelock from Tuggeranong are also competing in  selection  trials for  the NSW team to the Arafura Games in Darwin. Good luck guys!
