Tuggeranong boxer wins NSW State Title

Michael Ninness from Kambah is the first person in 20 years to claim a senior NSW Amateur Boxing Title for the ACT.

The NSW Titles were conducted at Campbelltown over the weekend 9-10 December and Michael who boxes for the Canberra Police & Citizens Youth Club in Tuggeranong competed in the 91kg Heavyweight Division.

Michael received a bye into the Semi Final on Sunday morning and was matched with Paul Sloan, an experienced boxer from the Blacktown PCYC. Paul’s walk-up style suited Michael who racked up early points.

The referee was called into action in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, placing three standing-8 counts on Michael's opponent. The referee stopped the contest late in the 3rd round, ruling that Michael had clearly outclassed his opponent.

In the finals bout, Michael was matched with James Sekulouski from Bankstown PCYC. In a previous meeting between the two, Michael had prevailed with a close points decision.

On this occasion there was little doubt as to the superior boxer with Michael racking up a lead of 15 points to end the bout inside three rounds. In the computer scoring system once a boxer is 15 points ahead a bout may be ended.

The win lifts Michael into contention for several international tournaments.

Whilst the competition at that level would be welcomed the goal remains the Australian Titles to be held in New South Wales next October as a stepping-stone for the next Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002.

State Titles—open or not?

Regrettably, several boxers were refused weigh-in at the State Titles because they had not had adequate experience. As the titles have previously been regarded as "open" to anyone, we are asking NSWABA for a firm ruling on this matter.

2001 Calendar

The 2001 boxing calendar for NSW/ACT is expected to be available at the end of January, and will be published in the next edition of Canberra Boxing Bulletin. Canberra is seeking to have a minimum of 4 tournaments included in the calendar.

Arafura Games 2001—Darwin

The 2001 Arafura Games in Darwin will be held in May. It is understood that NSWABA will conduct a round-robin selection for these games in February 2001.

National Titles 2001

Amateur Boxing Australia has decided that the 2001 National Titles will be held in October in Sydney.

New state judges

Canberra’s zone judges Richard Terry and Tony Whelan sat for their written and practical examinations for State Level at the titles on 9-10 December. There will be a course in Canberra in February or March, for people wanting to become new zone judges. The date will be settled shortly - contact 0407 266920 for information.

Under-14 boxers in NSW and ACT

The NSW Govt’s administrative ban on under-14 boxers remains in place. In 2000, NSWABA decided not to register their under-14 athletes at all, thereby depriving them of the chance to box interstate (including in the ACT). NSWABA has now reversed this policy so we will see under-14 bouts in Canberra in 2001.
