admin@actboxing.cjb.net The 28 October tournament held at Tuggeranong PCYC was well patronised, with nearly 300 people present. 32 boxers weighed in, from Goulburn, Wagga Wagga, Batemans Bay, Campbelltown, Oakdale, Dapto, Penrith, Dubbo, including a record 18 from the 4 Canberra clubs. There were 11 bouts and 4 exhibitions, including 2 junior bouts. Results (in weight order, juniors first) were:
The Best Junior trophy was awarded to Dustin Roberts, who trains with Terry “Animal” Maguire in Tuggeranong, whilst Newcastle’s Jay Astill won the Best Senior boxer of the night. Locals Michael Ninnes, Adam Lovelock, Ben Molloy and Steve Dalla Costa were unable to be matched on this occasion, though Ben and Adam each took part in an exhibition bout. Congratulations to the coaches and boxers from the four Canberra gyms - Turner & Tuggeranong PCYCs, Underground Training Centre, and Flames Fitness. It’s great to see Flames Fitness entering the competition, and to have Turner PCYC showing the flag again after an extended absence. Tuggeranong PCYC weighed-in 10 boxers, Underground 4, Turner PCYC 2 and Flames 2. We saw some excellent boxing, with several very evenly matched performances making the judges’ work very hard. ACT Boxing greatly appreciates the work of ringside physician Dr Steve Myers; the referees/judges: Steve Donkin, Richard Terry, Bill Hillary and Wayne Rose; our timekeeper Thea Harris; and our announcer for the night, Marguerite McKinnon. A big thank you to the hard-working volunteers who helped out with the myriad of jobs before, during and after the tournament, and to Jack Pappas for his generous assistance with the boxing ring. The raffle prize, for $220 worth of Instant Lottery tickets, was generously donated by Newsagency1, and was won by boxer Chris Ryan of Penrith. Videotapes of the evening can still be purchased – contact Mary on 0413 807679.
The NSW State Championships have been moved to the weekend 9-10 December and will be held at the Campbelltown PCYC in Minto. Medical and weigh-in 12-3pm Saturday, boxing starts 7.30pm. Juniors: 14-16 years, Seniors 17-33 years. All boxers must be registered in advance, registrations will NOT be done on the day. Interested in gaining your NSWABA Level 1 coach’s qualification? We plan to run a special L1 training course in Canberra one weekend in February. Advance registration for this course is mandatory, you will not be able to “just turn up”. For more info including costs, call Tony Whelan on 0407 26692 We have an urgent need to increase the number of tournament judges for the Canberra and Southern NSW region. There are presently only two qualified judges in Canberra, and this number needs to be trebled in 2001; without more judges we cannot expect to get more tournaments. After a one-day training course, trainee judges need to do “trial” judging at one or more tournaments till they are ‘up to speed’, after which they can judge tournaments in the southern zone. If you are an adult (either gender) prepared to commit some time to tournament judging, please talk to us about it. We will be running a special Judges Training Course in Canberra one weekend in February. There is no charge for the course, but advance registration is mandatory. Call Tony on 0407 266920 asap to discuss details.
