SRMC report

The recent meeting of the Sports and Recreation Ministers Council in Canberra examined issues concerning  boxing and combat sports. The recommendations relating to amateur boxing were:

Ř       Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments encourage the development of codes of practice for amateur and professional boxing and martial art contests that are consistent with current legislation;

 Ř       that boxing’s governing bodies take steps to develop a set of modified rules to further enhance the development and safety aspects of junior boxing for under 14’s, and amend the minimum age for competitive boxing to 12 years;

 Ř       that boxing’s governing bodies adopt the recommended safety practices listed in the “Medical Handbook of Amateur Boxing”, prepared by the Medical Commission of the AIBA);

 Ř       in determining the appropriateness of female participation in boxing bouts, responsible authorities should bear in mind community standards, anti-discrimination laws, relevant medical research and appropriate minimum medical standards;

 Ř       the commissioning of a three-phase research project into the effects of participating in boxing and combat sports.  Specific research should be targeted at a comprehensive literature search, a longitudinal study into the long-term effects of athletes who participate in boxing, and a study into the social issues surrounding the participation of individuals in boxing and combat sports;

 Electronic copies of the working group report can be obtained from ACT Boxing Inc by email.

New boxing club on the north side

A new training facility is scheduled to open this month in Spence (Belconnen). For more information call Dave on 6259 7338

Coaching courses

NSWABA will conduct a Level 1 coaching course and exam on the weekend 14-15 October, at the Blacktown PCYC. If required, there will also be a Level 2 exam and refresher courses for L1 and L2 coaching. If there is  sufficient demand, we may run a L1 course in November in Canberra. Expressions of interest are needed asap. For info about courses and costs call Tony on 0407 266920.

Referee/Judge training

A Referees and Judges (R&J) training course will be conducted in Blacktown on the weekend 14-15 October.

The R&J course trains people as tournament judges, and judging experience is a prerequisite for those judges wishing to become a referee. Candidates are required to develop experience by trial-judging at tournaments in the region in the months following the course. (The Canberra tournament on 28 October is an obvious opportunity to start this.)  There is no charge for this course.

Call Tony on 0407 266920 to discuss details. Women are very welcome to train as judges.

Coaches meeting

There will be a coaches meeting on Saturday 16 Sept at 1pm, at Underground Training Centre in  Liardet Street, Weston. Enquiries: Dave Delfino 6259 7338
