Canberra Boxing Bulletin - July 2000
About 300 people attended the amateur
boxing night at the Goulburn PCYC
on Saturday 1st July. It
was pleasing to see a good Canberra crew in attendance to support the boxers.
Results are as follows:
Referee Wayne Rose, judges Richard Terry, Wayne Rose and Tony Whelan. Medical officer Dr Steve Myers. Pre-matching by Ross Clout. Weigh-in management by Ross Clout, Bob Barron and Ron Skuse. The 2000 titles for the NSW Southern Districts zone will be held on the weekend 12-13 August at the Canberra PCYC, corner McKay Gardens and Watson Street in Turner. Weigh-in on Saturday is 12-2pm. Preliminaries and some finals will be held on the Saturday night, remaining finals on Sunday morning. Divisions: Junior (14-16) and senior (17-33). There will
be novice bouts (for boxers with less than 6 bouts experience) and open bouts
for more experienced boxers. Boxers must be already registered and financial with
NSWABA, and must have a red and a blue singlet with them. The club a boxer
represents must be financial with the Zone. Clubs from outside the Zone must
pay an entry fee. Billets: Can you help with providing a place for a NSW boxer or coach to stay on the Saturday night? Call Tony on 0407 266920 if you can assist.

Annual General Meeting 30 July The annual general meeting of ACT Boxing Inc will be held
on Sunday 30th July 2000 at the Weston Creek Community Centre, 8
Parkinson Street, Weston. This is adjacent to the south-east corner of the
Cooleman Court shopping centre. The meeting commences at 2pm.
Membership may be taken out or renewed at the meeting. Elections for President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary and 3 Board members will be held at the meeting. Nominations will be received prior to and at the meeting. From this July issue, ACT Boxing is mailing a copy of the
Canberra Boxing Bulletin to anyone interested in amateur boxing in the ACT or
surrounding regions. If you did not receive this edition in the mail, contact Tony Whelan on 0407 266920 with your address details, to be added to the mailing list free of charge. NSW State Novice championships The NSWABA is conducting a Novice Championships for
boxers aged 14-33 who have not had more than 5 bouts experience. This will be
a round-robin series where all boxers will box the others in their division
over the period of the series. Winners receive 3 points, losers 2 points, for
each bout contested. The first medical and weigh-in is on Sunday 6th August from 10am-12pm at South Sydney Junior Leagues Club. Only boxers who attend this weigh-in will be permitted to compete in the rest of the championships. Boxers must hold their weight division throughout the series. The first bouts will be on Tuesday 8 August at 7.30pm. NSWABA will conduct a coaches course and exam on the weekend 14-15 October, at the Blacktown PCYC. If two boxers are wearing similarly coloured clothes, gloves and head-guards, there is greater potential for a judge to make a mistake when attributing scores, especially with computer scoring. Hence the headgear, singlets and gloves should correspond with the corner colour (red or blue). At state, national and international level these requirements are enforced strictly. At local level, the correct singlet colour is a minimum requirement. Get your ACT Boxing t-shirt from the Underground Training Centre in Liardet Street, Weston (adjacent to the Cooleman Court shopping precinct). Only available in white, sizes M, L, XL or XXL, for just $20. Get yours soon, the supply is running low. For links to Internet websites of international boxing

We all think we know who the winner was, but many people don’t know how boxing judges actually make their decisions. The material below summarises the method used. During a round each judge keeps track of
which boxer has landed the most scoring blows. Non-scoring blows are
those which infringe rules, or which do not involve the knuckle area of the
closed glove, or which land on the arms, or
which connect without the weight of the body or shoulder. A loud
smacking thud is often the result of a hit with an open glove. Hitting with an
open glove rather than using the knuckle is not boxing, and these blows are
not scored. At the end of the round, the boxer with less scoring
blows has their quota of 20
points reduced; the amount of reduction depends on the difference in number of
scoring blows. For every three blows, one point is deducted, so if Blue has 6 less scoring blows than Red, Blue’s score is
reduced by 2 points (to 18). The score for the round would therefore be Red
20, Blue 18. At the end of a bout, the scores for the rounds are
totalled, and the boxer with the greater score is nominated as winner by the
judge. Where judges nominations are not unanimous, the majority
prevails. Where a boxer is warned by the referee for a foul, the
referee stops the bout and notifies the judges of the foul. After the score
for a round is calculated, a penalty adjustment (1 point) is made for each
warning to a boxer. With computer scoring,
the judges do not manually track the scores but instead press a button
which tells the computer which boxer landed a scoring blow.
No score will be recorded unless a majority of the judges press the
same boxer’s button within a one-second ‘window’ in time. Where the
computer calculates that one boxer has an unbeatable lead over the other, the
timekeeper blows a whistle, and the bout is recorded as “RSCO” ( referee
stopped contest – outclassed). *** |
