Canberra boxing night 13 May

The recent successful tournament at the Turner PCYC on 13 May featured 9 bouts and two exhibitions.  Boxers attended from Underground Training Centre, Tuggeranong PCYC, Bowral, Campbelltown, Bankstown, Wagga Wagga, Dapto, Penrith, and Glenroy (Vic).

Local boxers participating were Darren Summerrell, Clayton Tidbury, Sam Towill, Mike Smith, and novices Justin Dubanya, Ben Molloy, Ashlee Lopez and Kevin Hollis. Campbelltown’s Tommy Browne boxed two bouts, winning both.

Deputy Opposition Leader Ted Quinlan and Sports Minister Ted Stefaniak presented the trophies for the first two bouts of the night, while the other trophies were presented by members of the Oceania team in residence at the AIS.

Thank you to the boxers and their coaches, and congratulations to Richard Terry and all the helpers for making it such a smoothly-run event,Thanks also to referees/judges John Thompson, Paul Thompson, Richard Terry, Wayne Rose & Tony Whelan.

Oceania Championships

The 2000 Oceania Championships were held in Canberra  at the Australian Institute of Sport from 19-23 May following the last-minute cancellation of the original arrangements for Samoa.

Advance publicity and attendance was generally disappointing, though the finals night on Tuesday was well attended and telecast on pay TV.

For this Olympics, there is a limit of one boxer per weight division from the Oceania Zone (unlike Europe and the Americas which will have a larger contingent). The Oceania Championships -gold medal winners listed below will (subject to confirmation) be the Oceania team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
