Boxing Inc The 2000 Australian Champion-ships will be in Queensland from 12-15 April inclusive, after which the teams will go to Samoa for the Oceania championships. The winners from Oceania will be put forward as the team for the Olympic Games in September. Selection for the NSW senior team to the Australian Championships is by a round-robin qualifying series being conducted in January, February & March. Entries for the series have closed. Junior boxers (aged 14-16) will be selected for the NSW team at a tournament on 26 February, at Coogee RSL. Four Canberra boxers have entered the round-robin qualifying series for the state team. From Tuggeranong PCYC, Mick Ninnes (light-heavy) and Rod Djokic (super heavy), and from Underground Training Centre in Weston, Simon Mitchell (middle) and Gary Trounson (heavy). The first of the round-robin series was held on 11 January, for the heavier weight divisions. Mick Ninnes outpointed his Bankstown opponent, Rod Djokic won by stoppage in round 2 against his Campbelltown opponent, while Gary Trounson lost on points to Dan Godfrey from Goulburn. The 2000 calendar for NSWABA is still being finalised, but the following are the dates proposed for Canberra tournaments:
In addition we will host the Southern Zone titles on the weekend 12-13 August. Tournaments we would expect to support in/around the zone include (dates tentative): Sat 19 February Springwood Sat 11 March Campbelltown Sat 25 March Dapto (W'gong) Sat 3 June Oakdale Sat 1 July Goulburn Sat 7 October Campbelltown We have a supply of good quality white t-shirts bearing the ACT Boxing logo in colour across the chest of the shirt. Sizes M, L, XL and XXL, cost only $20. You can buy yours at the Under-ground Training Centre gym in Weston, or call Tony on 0407 266920. Now you know what to buy your partner or friend for their next birthday! The Southern District zone of NSWABA is in need of people to act as referees and/or judges at competitions in the zone (which includes Canberra). Without adequate numbers of qualified officials, tournaments cannot be held. On the weekend 29-30 January there will be a course in Blacktown for people wishing to become a competition judge or referee. There is no charge for this course. Following the course, candidates must do "trial" judging experience of about 80 bouts (approx 5-6 tournaments) before being granted a zone judge ticket. Normally, further experience is required before a referee badge is issued. Local candidates this year would be expected to do their "trial" experience at tournaments in Canberra, Goulburn, Oakdale, Springwood, Wollongong and Campbelltown. The course and experience placements are not difficult. However, there is no point in doing the program unless you intend to officiate at tournaments in the Southern zone over the next couple of years. You need to be at least 18 years old, there is no upper age limit. Some knowledge of amateur boxing is advantageous but there is no specific experience required to enrol. Candidates of either gender are welcome. If you might be interested in helping amateur boxing as a referee or judge, contact Tony Whelan on 0407 266920. Boxing skill & fitness training is conducted at the following gyms in Canberra (women welcome). Note that times and details are tentative, as programs for the new year are still being finalised for some clubs. Tuggeranong PCYC (Erindale), phone 6296 1292. Coaches Mark Tawton, Rod Djokic

ACT Boxing is an incorporated body set up in 1999 to promote and encourage greater community participation in safe, healthy, physical activity through boxing. Our aim to is involve much larger numbers of people, of both sexes and any age, in recreational or competitive boxing. We also aim to have more people involved as coaches and officials (referees, judges, timekeepers). ACT Boxing Inc has accepted a funding grant of $1000 from the ACT Bureau of Sport and Recreation. The grant is to assist with operational costs in 2000, our first full year of operation. We need more people to become involved with the organisation - and there is currently a vacancy on our Board. Contact David James on 0408 863084 or Tony Whelan on 0407 266920. The NSWABA will conduct a Level 1 (basic) coaching course on the weekend 29-30 January, in Blacktown. This is for people wanting to act as coach/trainer for competition boxers. You must have at least a level 1 certificate to act as a boxer's trainer in a comp-etition. There will also be a re-fresher course (1 day) for current coaches. Fees apply. Call 0407 266920 for details. The World Boxing Council (WBC) has voted Kostya Tszyu "Sensation of the Year" for his 10th-round victory over Miguel Angel Gonzales last August. And in voting for the WBC Fighter of the Year, Tszyu ranked third - behind Mexico's junior featherweight Erik Morales and British heavyweight Lennox Lewis. Kostya will defend his WBC junior welterweight title on 12 February, against Ahmed Santos of Mexico.
