Canberra Boxing Bulletin - No. 6, May 1999 Contents Good turnout at Canberra competition Age restrictions in boxing Selected upcoming competitions Results of Southern District tournament § published in the first week of each month § your news and views welcome ACT Boxing Phone 0416 036627 Good turnout at Canberra competition The first competition night for the Southern Districts zone for 1999 was held in Canberra at the Tuggeranong PCYC on Saturday 1st May. Fifty six boxers registered for the tournament. In all there were 23 bouts in front of an audience of around 300 people. Five of the junior bouts involved boxers under 14, there were nine other junior bouts and nine senior bouts. Best senior bout of the night was awarded to Dani El Charmi and Gerard O’Mahony, with best junior bout to Luke Boyd and Craig Ruddiman. Results are listed overleaf. As always, a number of boxers could not be matched on the night, including several of the seniors from Canberra. With other zone competitions coming up at Young and Bowral, hopefully those who missed out on 1st May will have a chance to step into the ring soon. Boxers on the program were from the following clubs: Bankstown, Bowral, Camden, Campbelltown, Canberra, Chester Hill, Crockers Gym, Earlwood. Fairfield, Griffith, Magpie Gym, Oakdale, Richmond, Roy Jones Gym, Silver Fox (Young), St Mary’s, Stan Green’s (Lithgow), Sutherland. It was good to see plenty of club members coming down to Canberra to support their boxers. A NSWABA level 1 coaching course and a coaches refresher course were run over the same weekend by NSWABA Registrar John Thompson. A meeting of the Southern Districts Zone of NSWABA was also held in Canberra over the weekend. Zone president Don Abnett was elected to life membership in recognition of his continuing contribution to the zone over many years. It was resolved to pursue the possibility of merging the Southern Districts zone with part of the current Orana zone in view of the difficulties the latter zone has had this year. The meeting also appointed Tony Whelan and Steve Chester as its delegate and alternate delegate to the NSWABA. A joint Commonwealth/State Working Group of Sports Ministers is looking at "modified rules for juniors" in amateur boxing. The working group will shortly arrange a round table meeting with a number of sporting bodies and "interested parties" to discuss the issue. ACT Boxing will be involved with these proceedings, and will argue that governments have no business interfering with a sport that already has far stricter safety controls for juniors than any other contact sport.
