Canberra Boxing Bulletin Number 5 - April 1999 Contents AIS challenge tournament 10th April Coogee-Randwick Canberra boxing on 1st May New internet site Coaching & judging ACT Boxing ACT Politicians Bowral date change New NSW Minister Campbelltown PCYC Canberra clubs AIS challenge tournament 10th April The Australian Institute of Sport are hosting a challenge tournament for the second position on the Australian team to go to the Oceania Games in late April. The tournament will be on Saturday 10th April at the AIS multipurpose training hall at Bruce. Entry $5, starts 7.30pm. The program will feature Chris Hamilton (Silver Medallist at the under 19 World Championships), Stuart Fraser (1998 Common-wealth Games team member ), and Jason DeLisle (World Kick Boxing champion). Coach Simon Mitchell took two of the Turner PCYC team to the competition night at Coogee-Randwick RSL on 26 February. Rommel Formales had his first loss (on points) while Mike Smith lost by RSCH in his first bout, but both boxers had photos in the March edition of World of Boxing magazine. Is there a moral there? Tuggeranong PCYC will host an official NSWABA Southern Districts competition night on Saturday 1st May. Doors open 5.30pm, boxing starts 6pm sharp. Admission $5 adults, $2 children under 14. Hot food and soft drinks available. There will be junior and senior boxing bouts and a martial art exhibition. Boxers and coaches note: weigh-in is 1-2pm. Pre-matching is essential Those pre-matched prior to the day will get priority on the program if there are not enough timeslots for everyone. Boxers should already be registered with NSWABA prior to the event The Amateur Boxing Association of England now has a web site at www.amateurboxing.freeserve.co.uk On the weekend of 1-2 May, there will be NSWABA courses run at PCYC Tuggeranong for:
The referees/judges course is for adults (male or female) who want to be involved in judging or refereeing amateur boxing in NSW and the ACT. The course is not difficult. After passing the exam, you need to do trial judging of a number of competition bouts before receiving your zone judge ticket. The level 1 coaching course is a basic introduction to boxing coaching, and entitles you to be a boxers corner person at ABA competitions. For more information ring Tony Whelan on 0416 036627. A meeting was held last month to discuss the role of a local amateur boxing association. It was felt that having a local association was important for dealing with governments, politicians, the media, and other organisations. It was agreed to continue the lobbying of MPs, and to defer electing officials until a larger meeting is held, probably in May. The name ACT Amateur Boxing Association has been reserved with the Registrar of Associations. For brevity, the association will use the title ACT Boxing. ACT Boxing recently had a brief meeting with Territory Minister for Health Michael Moore. The Minister advised us that he was inclined towards a ban on boxing for anyone under 18 years of age because of perceived risk of brain damage. This was as a result of approaches from the Australian Medical Association (AMA). ACT Boxing argued that the AMA's claims about brain injury could not be backed by evidence, and that all controlled research to date has found no link between amateur boxing and brain damage. We proposed that if injury was a basis for banning a sport, then several major sports including rugby should be banned since they have massively greater injury rates than boxing. In NSW alone, several cases of total permanent paralysis occur annually through rugby tackles. To his credit, Minister Moore has agreed to examine the research evidence and the relative risk of injuries in boxing compared to other sports, and to reconsider his viewpoint. ACT Boxing will be providing information packs to other ACT politicians in the near future, and will be actively lobbying them in person, to counter the dishonest campaign being run by the AMA. The scheduled NSWABA competition at Mittagong RSL (Bowral Boxing Club) has been brought forward from 12 June to Saturday 5 June. This is not too far down the road from us, and it would be good to see a sizeable crew from Canberra attend. It is regrettable that the New South Wales Minister for Sport in the last government saw fit to ban under 14 boxing, as a publicity stunt for her election campaign. It is understood that Ms Harrison may be omitted from the new Ministry following Labors re-election. The ban was an administrative decision, and no laws have been passed, so the League and the Association should both be concentrating on persuading the new NSW Sports Minister to reverse the ban on junior boxing. Why not write a short letter to the NSW Minister for Sport at Parliament House, Sydney 2000, urging the ban on junior boxers be reversed. Every letter has an impact, get your friends and family to write too. It only needs to be a sentence long. Keep it polite of course! The competition held on 20th March at Campbelltown/Minto PCYC included four boxers from Canberra. Adam Lovelock from Tugger-anong PCYC won his junior bout convincingly, while Rommel Formales of Turner PCYC excelled in all three rounds to win his trophy. Simon Mitchell was judged to have lost his bout in a disappointing split decision. Despite an ankle injury in round three, Nathan Carter triumphed in his first contest, just too fast for his opponent. The event was a well-run and well attended night, with 16 bouts and 2 exhibitions. A goodsized group of Canberra folk turned up to provide support to our boxers and to PCYC coach Peter Blencowe.
