Courses

Boxing ACT conducts regular training courses to accredit boxing coaches, judges and referees. Course dates can be found on the Calendar page

Level One Coaching course

The Level One Coaching Course provides training and formal accreditation to adults wishing to become boxing coaches (or kickboxing or boxing fitness coaches). New procedures were introduced in 2007, so please read the information below carefully.

ONLINE (INTERNET) GENERAL PRINCIPLES COURSE

Boxing ACT is using a new model for the coaching course which differs from past procedure. Accreditation as a Level One coach requires that you complete several "general principles" units and several "boxing-specific" units.

You will need to complete your "general principles" units in your own time over the Internet, via the Australian Sporting Commission's online learning portal, before you can enrol in our boxing-specific class-based course. In other words, THE  ONLINE COURSE IS A PRE-REQUISITE TO OUR CLASSROOM COURSE

The online course is available by registering at https://learning.ausport.gov.au There is no charge for the online course at present, though charges may be introduced in the future. You can complete the 5 online units at your own pace and can re-try the assessment (exam) online as many times as you need, till you get a 100% mark.

Once you have completed assessment for all 5 units, you can print the Course Completion Certificate and send a copy to Boxing ACT with your enrolment form for our class-based course.

CLASS-BASED BOXING-SPECIFIC COURSE

This is a fee-paying full-day course and examination, available to residents of the ACT and neighbouring centres such as Queanbeyan. If you live in another state, you should contact your own state's boxing association about the courses they offer. Course graduates must then undertake (or have already undertaken) supervised practice coaching boxing or kickboxing classes before the candidate's name is submitted for accreditation to the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme at the Australian Sports Commission. The certification of your practice coaching must be done by a coach already accredited by NCAS and who is known to us in the ACT.

Several courses are scheduled each year, and extra dates/courses may be considered for small groups of 5-6 people on request. Pre-enrolment at least two weeks in advance is mandatory for all courses as a study pack is posted to enrolees for pre-course reading and preparation. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT A COURSE WILL BE RUN ON THE ADVERTISED DATE. If the number of enrolments received 2 weeks before the course is too low, the course will be cancelled.

The syllabus for our Level One Coaching Course is nationally approved by Boxing Australia and the Australian Sports Commission. We stress that course graduates will NOT receive NCAS accreditation until they submit to us a certification from an ACT Coach recognised by us, verifying that the graduate has completed at least 30 hours of boxing or kickboxing coaching practice under supervision. It is YOUR responsibility to obtain and submit this certification; Boxing ACT cannot do that for you. Your course materials include a copy of the certification form.

Enrolment forms for the Level One Coaching Course can be found via the Documents button above, then under Forms.

Judging courses - open to any adult member of Boxing ACT

Judging courses equip adults with the basic knowledge and skills to judge the outcome of amateur boxing competition bouts. Previous experience in boxing is not essential, but candidates must be (or become) financial members of Boxing ACT ($10 annual fee) to enrol. Courses are one full day in length.

Candidates who complete the theory course and examination undertake supervised practice judging at tournaments; upon reaching a satisfactory standard, they may then be issued with an ACT Judge badge and commence judging at tournaments in Canberra and regional New South Wales.

One or two courses are scheduled early each year. Progression to national and international qualifications is available. If you are interested in judge training, please email or phone us to discuss.

Refereeing courses - open to registered ACT Judges

Currently registered ACT judges may proceed to undertake a refereeing course, which assists them to acquire the knowledge and skill to be a referee at amateur boxing competitions. Courses are two days in length.

Candidates who complete the theory course and examination undertake supervised practice refereeing of sparring sessions at affiliated gyms, and referee exhibition bouts at tournaments. Upon reaching a satisfactory standard, they may then be issued with an ACT Referee badge and commence referee duties at tournaments in Canberra and regional New South Wales.

One or two courses are scheduled early each year. Progression to national and international qualifications is available. ACT judges interested in undertaking referee training should contact their Referee/Judge Coordinator.
