Most boxing skills & fitness training sessions at these clubs are suitable for beginners from around age ten for either gender. Talk to one or more of the clubs for information about what they offer and which classes will best suit your needs. You might like to ask to sit in and watch a class to see how it is run before you decide on a membership. Some clubs have special classes or special supervision for children from age 8 ("Kid Gloves").

The emphasis is on basic skill development and enhancing fitness and strength. Many people also find it useful for improving co-ordination and flexibility.  Be aware that sparring (i.e. exchanging blows with another person) is NOT part of the beginner's training regimen.

Sparring practice is a very demanding but satisfying workout, and is essential for (but not limited to) those considering competition boxing. Sparring is a dynamic skill development exercise for both parties, not an opportunity to hurt someone. Opportunities for sparring vary from one club to another. It is permitted solely at the discretion of the coaches, and only under their direct supervision. No-one is required to spar. It is restricted to those people who have achieved adequate basic skill levels and who wish to develop further. Participants must always wear a mouth-guard and a head-guard. You should use proper sparring gloves (normally 16oz) - light-weight bag mitts are NOT acceptable.

Feedback

If you have attended classes at one of these clubs and would like to give feedback about the way in which the training was conducted, please contact us. We'll pass on your comments (anonymously) to the club management. Suggestions for improvement are very welcome.
